LCD Vs LED Display: Differences, LCD Types And How LCDs Work
Quick answer: most screens sold as “LED” are actually LCDs with an LED backlight. The liquid crystal layer forms the image and the LEDs only provide light from behind. A true LED display makes the image with the LEDs themselves: each pixel is a light-emitting diode, as in large video walls and signs, or an organic LED in OLED screens.
For embedded OEM products, the practical choice is usually between a TFT LCD for color graphics, a monochrome LCD for fixed digits and icons, and self-emissive options such as OLED or LED segment displays.

LCD Vs LED Display At A Glance
| Factor | LCD (Including “LED-Backlit” LCD) | LED Display (Direct-View LED) |
|---|---|---|
| How the image is made | Liquid crystal cells switch light from a backlight or from ambient light | Each pixel or segment is an LED that emits its own light |
| Typical sizes | From tiny modules to large panels; fine pixel pitch at small sizes | Large signs and video walls; small sizes mainly as LED digits or indicators |
| Resolution at small size | High; suitable for detailed text and graphics | Limited by LED pitch unless using micro-LED or OLED |
| Power | Backlight is the main load; reflective LCDs can run without one | Depends on how many LEDs are lit and how bright |
| Sunlight readability | Achieved with high-brightness backlights, transflective or reflective modes and optical bonding; see LCD brightness in nits | Large LED signs can be very bright |
| Typical OEM use | Instruments, controllers, appliances, HMI panels, handheld devices | Outdoor signage, scoreboards, simple digit readouts |
How An LCD Works
An LCD is a sandwich of two glass plates with a thin layer of liquid crystal between them and a polarizer on each side. Transparent electrodes on the glass apply a voltage to each pixel or segment. The voltage changes how the liquid crystal molecules are aligned, which changes the polarization of light passing through. The front polarizer then lets that light through or blocks it, so each area appears light or dark.
The light comes from a backlight behind the panel, from ambient light reflected at the rear, or both. Color TFT LCDs add a color filter with red, green and blue subpixels, and a thin-film transistor at every subpixel holds its voltage. See what is a TFT LCD display and the LCD backlight module guide.
Types Of Liquid Crystal Display
LCDs are usually classified in three independent ways. A real product combines one choice from each.
By Light Mode
| Mode | How It Is Lit | Typical Fit | Catalogue Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transmissive | Backlight only | Indoor equipment, dim environments, negative-mode displays | S1982D (TN, negative transmissive) |
| Reflective | Ambient light reflected by a rear reflector; no backlight needed | Battery-powered meters and remotes in lit rooms | S3686D (TN, reflective rear polarizer) |
| Transflective | Ambient light and backlight | Products used both outdoors and in the dark | S350FPQI (3.5-inch transflective TFT) |

By Drive Method
- Passive matrix: segment and many monochrome dot-matrix LCDs, driven row by row without a transistor per pixel. Simple and low cost; see active-matrix vs passive-matrix LCD.
- Active matrix (TFT): a transistor per subpixel for color graphics, video and higher resolution; see TFT LCD modules.
By Liquid-Crystal Mode
- Monochrome: TN, HTN, STN, FSTN, DFSTN and VA, which trade cost, viewing angle, multiplexing and contrast. See the monochrome LCD type guide.
- Color TFT: TN, IPS and VA, which mainly differ in viewing angle, color consistency and contrast. See IPS vs TFT and TN vs IPS.
Which Should An OEM Product Use?
- Fixed digits and icons, low power: a monochrome segment LCD, reflective if the product is always used in light. See custom segment LCD.
- Text menus: a character LCD or a graphic LCD.
- Color graphics, touch or video: a TFT LCD with an LED backlight; compare touch options.
- Deep blacks in a thin, mostly dark UI: consider OLED; see OLED vs TFT LCD.
- Large outdoor signs: direct-view LED displays, which are outside the scope of LCD modules.
LCD Vs LED FAQs
Is an LED screen better than an LCD?
Most “LED” monitors and TVs are LCDs with an LED backlight, so they are the same technology. Compared with true self-emissive displays, LCDs offer high resolution at small sizes, mature supply and many interface and temperature options, while OLED and micro-LED offer deeper blacks.
What are the main types of LCD?
LCDs are classified by light mode (transmissive, reflective, transflective), by drive method (passive matrix or active-matrix TFT) and by liquid-crystal mode (for example TN, STN, FSTN, VA and IPS).
How does an LCD work in simple terms?
A voltage changes how liquid crystal molecules twist the polarization of light between two polarizers. That decides whether light from the backlight or from the room passes through each pixel or segment.
Does an LCD need a backlight?
Transmissive LCDs do. Reflective LCDs use ambient light and need no backlight, and transflective LCDs can use either.
Does SuccessLCD supply LED displays?
SuccessLCD supplies TFT LCD modules, monochrome LCD and LCM modules, custom segment LCDs, touch panels and cover lenses. LED backlights are part of many of these modules; direct-view LED signs are not part of the range.
