7-Segment LCD Display Guide: 7, 14 And 16-Segment Digits For Custom LCDs
Quick answer: a 7-segment LCD shows each digit with seven bar-shaped segments, labelled a to g, usually plus a decimal point. It displays the digits 0–9 and a limited set of letters, which is enough for meters, thermostats, scales and timers. A 14-segment or 16-segment digit adds diagonal and split segments so it can show the full uppercase alphabet, and a dot-matrix character shows any character from a font.
On a custom segment LCD the digits, decimal points, colons, units and icons are all drawn as fixed artwork on the glass. SuccessLCD designs this artwork together with the pin map and drive condition, so the digit style, size and segment count fit both the product window and the controller.

Anatomy Of A 7-Segment Digit
The segments are named clockwise from the top: a (top), b (upper right), c (lower right), d (bottom), e (lower left), f (upper left) and g (middle), plus DP for the decimal point. A digit “8” with its decimal point therefore uses eight segments. Colons, minus signs, unit legends and icons are separate segments.
7-Segment Vs 14-Segment Vs 16-Segment Vs Dot Matrix
| Digit type | Segments per digit | What it can show | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-segment | 7, plus DP | 0–9, minus sign and letters such as A, b, C, d, E, F, H, L, n, o, P, r, t, U | Meters, thermostats, timers, scales, instruments |
| 14-segment | 14, plus DP | Full uppercase alphabet and digits | Short text messages on appliances and audio equipment |
| 16-segment | 16, plus DP | Uppercase alphabet with better shapes (top and bottom bars split) | Alphanumeric status lines |
| Dot matrix (5 × 7 or 5 × 8) | 35–40 dots | Any character in the font, including lowercase and symbols | Character LCD modules and graphic displays |
Letters that a 7-segment digit cannot show clearly include K, M, V, W, X and Z. If the product must show words, use 14- or 16-segment digits or a dot-matrix area for that part of the display, and keep 7-segment digits for the numbers.
How Many Pins Does A Segment Display Need?
The pin count depends on the number of segments and on the drive method. With static drive every segment needs its own pin. With multiplexed drive the segments share common electrodes:
| Display content | Segments | Static drive pins | 1/4 duty pins |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 digits with decimal points | 32 | 33 (32 SEG + 1 COM) | 12 (8 SEG + 4 COM) |
| 6 digits with decimal points and 8 icons | 56 | 57 | 18 (14 SEG + 4 COM) |
| 8 alphanumeric 14-segment digits with DP | 120 | 121 | 34 (30 SEG + 4 COM) |
At 1/4 duty a 7-segment digit with its decimal point fits neatly on two segment lines (2 SEG × 4 COM = 8 segments). The drive condition affects contrast and viewing angle, so read segment LCD duty and bias before fixing the pin map.
Designing Digits For A Custom Segment LCD
Size and proportion
- Choose the digit height from the viewing distance and the most important reading in the product. Secondary values can be smaller.
- Keep stroke width and segment gaps consistent across all digits so that the display looks balanced.
- A slight italic slant is common and helps readability, but every digit field on the glass should use the same slant.
Layout
- Group digits by meaning, and put units, labels and icons next to the value they describe.
- Decide early where decimal points and colons are needed; each one is a segment and uses driver capacity.
- Reserve the full minimum viewing area in the enclosure window, including icons at the edges.
Artwork review
- Check every character the firmware must show, including error codes and start-up messages.
- Check that no two digits can be confused at the viewing angle used in the product.
- Review the segment-to-pin map with the firmware engineer before the glass is tooled.
Seven-segment style fonts are useful for interface mock-ups, but the glass itself is drawn as vector segment artwork on the drawing, so final shapes are approved on the LCD drawing rather than in a font file.
Which LCD Mode For Segment Digits?
Positive TN or HTN glass gives dark digits on a light background and works well in reflective, battery-powered products. Negative STN, DFSTN or VA glass gives bright digits on a dark background with a backlight, similar to an LED or VFD display. The trade-offs are explained in monochrome LCD types; for a VFD-like look, see VFD vs LCD.

7-Segment LCD FAQs
What letters can a 7-segment LCD display?
A 7-segment digit can show 0–9 and letters such as A, b, C, c, d, E, F, H, h, J, L, n, o, P, r, t, U and y. Letters with diagonal strokes, such as K, M, V, W, X and Z, cannot be shown clearly; use 14- or 16-segment digits for those.
What is the difference between a 7-segment and a 14-segment display?
A 14-segment digit adds diagonal and center segments to the seven bars, so it can show the full uppercase alphabet as well as numbers. It needs about twice as many segments per digit.
How many pins does a 4-digit 7-segment LCD need?
With decimal points it has 32 segments. Static drive needs 33 pins (32 segment lines and one common); 1/4 duty multiplexed drive needs 12 pins (8 segment lines and 4 commons).
Is a 7-segment LCD the same as a 7-segment LED display?
The digit shape is the same, but an LCD does not emit light. It switches segments on and off with a very small current, so it uses far less power, and it is read by reflected light or a backlight. LCDs must be driven with an AC waveform.
Can I get a 7-segment LCD with my own icons and digit size?
Yes. A custom segment LCD is drawn to your artwork, outline and pin map, with the digit size, icons, legends and drive condition chosen for your product.
