LCD Screen Size, Active Area & PPI Calculator

Enter a diagonal and a resolution to get the aspect ratio, active-area width and height, pixel pitch and pixel density (PPI) of a display. Or start from the active-area dimensions in a drawing. Everything runs in your browser.

How the calculator works

With square pixels, the active-area width is diagonal × H / √(H² + V²) and the height is diagonal × V / √(H² + V²), where H and V are the horizontal and vertical resolution. Pixel pitch is the active-area width divided by the horizontal resolution, and pixel density is √(H² + V²) / diagonal in inches.

The nominal size of a display refers to the active-area diagonal, the part that shows the image. The viewing area (the opening in the bezel or cover lens) is slightly larger, and the module outline is larger again because it includes the frame, backlight and FPC. Enclosure design should use the outline and viewing-area dimensions from the module drawing; this calculator gives the active area.

Frequently asked questions

What is the active area of a 7-inch 1024×600 display?

With square pixels the active area is about 153.4 × 89.9 mm with a pixel pitch of about 0.15 mm. Many 7-inch 1024×600 panels instead use a 154.21 × 85.92 mm active area, the same height as 800×480 panels, so their pixels are slightly wider than tall. Always take the exact figures from the module specification.

What is the difference between active area, viewing area and outline?

The active area contains the pixels. The viewing area is the window the user can see, a little larger than the active area. The outline is the full mechanical size of the module, used for the enclosure and mounting design.

How many pixels per inch does a 4.3-inch 480×272 display have?

About 128 PPI, with a pixel pitch of roughly 0.198 mm.
